Belonging Takes a Village

No Matter What

Belonging grows when youth feel seen, supported, and part of a community that believes in them, no matter what.

Dejah was a quiet child who often kept to herself. Tosha, her Professional Mentor, spent years building trust, exploring the city together, practicing social skills, and having honest, supportive talks. Together, they created a safe space where Dejah could feel confident trying new things and taking small risks.

By fourth grade, Dejah felt ready to step into a bigger role and ran for school president. She didn’t win at first, but Tosha encouraged her to reflect and try again. In fifth grade, Dejah ran a second time and won. She advocated for cleaner drinking fountains, curated a student artwork exhibit, and strengthened her school community. Her actions showed how one youth, supported and empowered, can positively impact an entire community.

Now in seventh grade, Dejah attends a private middle school on scholarship. She serves as an Ambassador Recruiter and is running to be Captain of the Ambassador Team. She continues to give back, supporting her peers and shaping a stronger, more connected school community.

Her growth shows how the skills youth learn in our program ripple outward, helping others and inspiring positive change.
