Riya Jivan

Professional Mentor

Born and raised in Berkeley, and having spent much time in San Francisco growing up, Riya is committed to serving and nurturing the communities that helped shape her. Riya attended Berkeley public schools, where she learned self-advocacy and the importance of seeking support when needed. The mentors who guided her throughout her educational journey had a lasting impact on her life and inspired her desire to become a Friend.

Riya earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto with a double major in Sociology and Indigenous Studies. Living and studying in Canada broadened her perspective and deepened her understanding of community, belonging, and relationship-building.

Riya has supported youth through a variety of programs in Toronto and the Bay Area, including serving as a swim instructor for disabled youth through Toronto's S.W.A.M. program, teaching beginner level swimmers through UC Berkeley summer camps, and coordinating events for youth on the autism spectrum as president of the University of Toronto Autism Alliance Student Association. Through these experiences, she developed a passion for helping young people build confidence, feel affirmed, and empowered while navigating their own identities, communities, and goals. In her free time, Riya enjoys spending time on trails and at the beach with her dog and being a foodie with her family and friends.
